What is FSSAI?
Eligibility for FSSAI Registration:
All food units engaged in Food Operating Business.
Based on the turnover and scale of business, such business have to apply for either of the license (Registration, State or Central). The criteria specified in rules is as follows:
- Annual Turnover below Rupees 12 Lakhs- FSSAI Registration.
- Annual Turnover must be between Rupees 12 Lakhs to 20 Crores- State License.
- Annual Turnover above Rupees 20 Crores- Central License.

What are the documents required to get FSSAI License?
- Passport size Photograph of Applicant
- Copy of Electricity / Water bill (Business Place)
- Copy of Rent Agreement (if Rented )

Food License Registration
- FSSAI license is a must for every Food business operator (FBO).
- The FSSAI registration is an online process.
- The validity of FSSAI license depends whether it is Basic, State or Central License.
- Basic licenses have a maximum validity period of 5 years.
- State licensing authority (SLA) has to renew the license after the period of 5 years to continue their food business operation in a particular state. However, the basic licensing authority (BLA) has no provision for renewal and its validity is limited up to 5 years only so FBOs need to apply again for new basic FSSAI license registration if they wish to continue their business after that period of time. Central licensing authority (CLA) issues one year license which can be renewed till the life of the FBO’s company/firm or entity and can be surrendered at any time by giving 30 days notice in written before surrendering their central FSSAI Licenses
FSSAI Central Licenses

- Central Licenses are issued by the FSSAI Head Office and are valid throughout India.*
FSSAI State Licenses
- FSSAI state license is mandatory for an entity that has an annual turnover of more than Rs. 12 Lakhs per year
- FSSAI state license is valid for one year from the date of issue
- FSSAI state license is mandatory for all entities that have their central and state license expiring on the same day
Entities that require a FSSAI state license include:
- Manufacturers and processors with an annual turnover of more than Rs.12 lakhs
- Storage units with an annual turnover of more than Rs.12 lakhs
- Distributors with an annual turnover of more than Rs.12 lakhs

To start a new Food business one must obtain food license from the FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India)
The FSSAI license is a 14 digit registration number which must be printed on food packages or displayed at the food outlet. The FSSAI registration or license is mandatory for all the food businesses, even small and medium scale enterprises are required to obtain FSSAI registration before starting their business. The main objective of this law was to ensure the quality of food products that are being consumed by consumers. If one fails to comply with this law then his/her business will be liable for penalty as well as imprisonment.
FSSAI license can be obtained in both Online and Offline mode. For centrally licensed products, one must submit an application in hard copy form along with supporting documents and a registration fee which varies from Rs 1000 to Rs 7500 depending on the turnover of your business and where you are located in India. After submitting the application, your file will be inspected within 30 days from date of receipt of application by the concerned department if found satisfactory then you will receive your 14 digit FSSAI license number otherwise you may receive a letter asking you to attend or fulfill deficiencies within 15 days period.
